When we say all are welcome – what we mean is that Jesus welcomes everyone. Everyone – without regard for skin color, language, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, neuro-diversity, income. Everyone – sinners and saints, folks who do good and folks who don’t do good as often as we’d like and folks who struggle to find the good at all.
Our welcome may not be perfect, but Jesus’ is. Our welcome may not always be as wide as we want it to be, because our own stuff gets in the way – but Jesus’ welcome is. Which means I, with my own prejudices and faults and blind spots, am welcome here. And you are welcome, too. Just as you are. And that’s not a tagline. It’s the truth.
