On September 20th, we commemorate Nelson Trout (1921–1996), who was the first African American to serve as bishop in the Lutheran church.
Trout was elected bishop of the South Pacific District of the American Lutheran Church (ALC) in 1983, a position he served through 1987. At the time of his election, he was a professor and director of minority studies at Trinity Lutheran Seminary, Columbus, Ohio.
Earlier in his career, he served as pastor in Alabama, where he was known for his preaching and became a friend and colleague of Martin Luther King Jr.
He also served in California and Wisconsin, and as Executive Director of Lutheran Social Services in Dayton, Ohio.
As a seminary student at Wartburg Theological Seminary in Dubuque, IA, I learned about Nelson in my American Genocide class with Dr Craig Nessan. In this class, we read A Rumor of Black Lutherans, which highlights the stories of Jehu Jones, Daniel Payne, and Rosa Young, among others.

My final project for this class was a collage I made to illustrate what I had learned. This collage will be displayed at church on September 20th along with a copy of the book.
